Update with some info! Thanks to a fellow collector- Robert G Harper transferred into E Company 309th when the 309th was stationed in Saveney France. D & E companies built a hosptial and detention center post war in Saveney. These were mostly used for wounded & other German POWs. Harpers home address was listed as a police station in Philadelphia which is hard to explain. He most likely was shift into this unit due to heavily casualties the unit took from the spanish flu. It is suspected harper traded for the coin or found it and possibly had a POW make it into a tag for him though it is hard to say. Another noteable man he Harper served w in E Company was Forrest Tucker Sr the father if the famous actor. Overall this adds a touch of research and an interesting storu behind the piece! Thanks for looking
Excellent WW1 Coin Dogtag 309th Engineers On 1700s British Copper. This is a pretty super little piece. I honestly dont want to sell it but if you pay my "dumb" price i guess i will let it go. I spent the past two hours throwing it back and forth between keeping or selling but bills needed to be paid so if it sells it sells. This is a dogtag stamped to R G Harper 309 engineers 1918 on a 1797 very worn british copper. What are the odds that happened must have been something he stumbled upon or traded for during WW1. The date isnt visible but supposedly this style was only used 1797. Either way it is still a 1790s copper used as a ww1 dogtag. Where are you going to find another ?
As for R G Harper i did a good bit of research but could pin him down one would need the rolls for 309th Engineers, i did read most were from indiana. There are plenty of R Harpers who served in the army in ww1 from indianna but i didnt see a R G Harper which dosent mean much as the middle intial is commonly left off. Ultimately i feel you need to rolls of the 309th to unlock the story.
