    Description

    Manuscript Power of Attorney document signed by John Andrew Weir dated January 11, 1864,  and also signed by him and dated the same day cancelling the revenue stamp on the back. For transfer of Harrisburg, Portsmouth, Mt. Joy & Lancaster Railroad stock. Pennsylvania.
    Stamp: R49a - 25c Protest imperforate. Huge margins. Beautiful appearance! No pin holes or apparent faults. CV: .00
    The document is folded and has some pin holes at the top not affecting the stamp.

    John Andrew Weir
    For several years a coach maker, then in the drug business. After retiring from this, and was appointed clerk in the office of the secretary of state by the governor. In the 1840 he was elected prothonotary of Dauphin county, Pennsylvania, was re-elected in 1843, and served all six years. During this period (1846) he became director of the Harrisburg Bank, and after wards became teller. He served as treasurer of the State Lunatic Hospital from it's beginning until 1880. A ruling Elder in what became Market Square Presbyterian Church. In politics he was a Whig, he was fully involved in the anti-slavery cause in Dauphin County.
