    Description

This china has a very early mark dating between 1879 and 1884
which makes this china between 136 and 141 years old.
This set of fine English china was brought by steamship in 1909 when the Johnston family came to America
    from Scotland.
Originally service for twelve, only two of the cups were lost over the last hundred plus years.
Samuel Radford was the youngest of the four sons of Edward Thomas and Sarah Radford. In the 1861 census Samuel is listed as a ‘flower painter on China’ at the age of about 17.
Samuel Radford was involved in a number of partnership at the New Market Works in Longton:
    Radford, Amison & Perkins (c.1875-Sept 1875)
    Radford & Amison (c.1876-1878)
    Samuel Radford (1879-1884)
    Radford & Ward (1884-1892)
After about 1913, the firm developed a new pottery mark called "Radfordian", and developed at least 10 or so different pottery marks, some using the R S or S R initials in various fonts, and some using the Radfordian back mark.
All pieces are in very fine condition without damage or repair.
